An enslaved African-American woman named Eve was convicted of poisoning her master and sentenced to be burned at the stake in Orange County, Virginia, in 1746. The site of her public execution became known as “Eve’s Wail.”
Nicholas P. Picerno, chair emeritus of the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation, remarks that in author Terry Barkley’s upcoming book, he “has woven Eve’s story into a wonderfully researched narrative relating a little-known sordid facet of Virginia’s history.”
