Robert Henry Cartmell (1828-1915), a cotton planter from Madison County, Tennessee, endured many losses during the American Civil War. This volume describes local preparations for war, Cartmell's brief service in the Confederate Army, Federal occupation of Jackson, and the lawless aftermath following their departure. It will be a complete transcribed and annotated edition of his diary from 1861 through 1865. This is the second of what will be a multi-volume collection of Robert Cartmell's diaries.
